Bob Hurst – Bass
Well, you can’t say I didn’t try. This NOT a complete transcription but it is the ‘bass part’ from the tune. I tries to get teh solo down but it is all over the place in terms of its phrasing and to say it is ‘loose’ is the understatement of the Century (it is not loose in the ‘poorly executed’ sense of the word, just there is a lot of playing with the pulse, against it, ahead, behind etc. I just can ‘t follow it. It’s stunning but beyond my cloth ears.
I have managed to get the head down and the main bass part underneath the trumpet, sax and piano solos. After that, you are on your own!
The tune is called ‘Elveen’ and is from the 1991 Wynton Marsalis album, Thick In The South – Soul Gestures in Southern Blue Vol. 1′. The track features legendary Coltrane sideman Elvin Jones on drums, hence the title. The New Orleans guys know to play a Blues. And Robert Leslie Hurst III is still one of the best.
