El Nazareno (excerpt) – Miguel Zenon

Hans Glawischnig – Bass

The trouble with Miguel Zenon material is it is can get incredibly dense at times and the bass parts are sometimes completely impossible to get into focus, even with the MOISES and Transcribe! software I am using. The rhythms Zenon uses in his compositions are incredible. I have a couple of charts that I downloaded from his site some time ago and they are very tough to follow never mind to read. Zenon’s bass player of choice, Austrian Hans Glawischnig appears on most of the recordings that Zenon has in his back catalogue and I deeply admire the guy’s chops/ These are really tough charts.

I started transcribing this tune with the intention of completing the whole thing but it just went too far off piste for me and I couldn’t get it down (I have also temporarily lost my work space so am doing the current transcriptions on my lap; its not very conducive to long sessions on complex compositions). The tune is called ‘El Nazareno’ composed by Henry D. Williams (whoever he is) but the arrangement is all Zenon (listen to his work with the SFJazz Collective – it’s insane). It is from the 2019 Zenon album ‘Sonero: the music of Ismael Rivera’. A great album and highly recommended. The chart is the head up to a point where things start to get lairy. It is not an easy read once it gets going but I wanted to post it as I think it gives us a great insight into the kinds of ideas that Zenon and Glawischnig are weaving on these recordings.
