Steve Harris – Bass
I can’t believe I have got this far without any Steve Harris! I was around to see the inception of Iron Maiden and was, in my own small way, a part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal which, arguably, Maiden fronted. The first time I actually saw the band it was with Paul Di’anno on vocals (I recall that the support band was French band ‘Trust’ with a young Nicko McBrain on drums). I was a big Harris fan (as all of us metal Bass Players were in those days and saw the band several times at the Reading and Donnington Rock Festivals in the 1980s and 90s but I have not listened to them for ages. I got a book recently about the history of NWOBHM and it triggered the memories of ‘The Number Of The Beast’ and this track in particular. Typical Maiden – melodic guitar driven Metal, furiously driven by Harris and the late Clive Burr (the perfect drummer for this band, in my opinion).
This is root notes and unison riffs. Classic stuff. The only issue with reading this is the tempo but I think I have got it all in. ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ from 1982.
