Burn – Deep Purple

Glenn Hughes – Bass

Another bucket list translation. I was in a band called No Quarter that hailed from the South Wales area and everyone suggested had something of Led Zeppelin about them (I couldn’t hear it, myself but the other guys were big fans) but I had a secret preference for Deep Purple. I always preferred the Gillan fronted version of the band but this track was the exception. Coverdale had a great voice undoubtedly and it is shown to good effect on this but the standout performance for everyone at the time was the Glenn Hughes ‘you know we had no time….’ section – it just wasn’t fair that every band all over the place struggles to find a vocalist and this band had two world class screamers!

The tune ‘Burn’ from the 1974 Purple album of the same name had everything; the voices, Paice’s drums on the verses, the Hughes vocal I just mentioned a roaring gutiar solo from Ritchie Blackmore and then that unbelievable keyboard solo from the GOAT, Jon Lord. I was never able to hear the Glenn Hughes bass part well enough to learn it so, now I can isolate it, here we are at last. There are a couple of guesses in there because the growling bass is so similar to the guitar and organ in terms of where is sits in the mix but there is certainly enough here to generate a performance.
