El Leon – Paoli Mejias

Ricardo Lugo – Bass

I picked up this album because Paoli Mejias plays percussion on a lot of Miguel Zenon’s stuff which IO adore and Zenon is on the Mejias recordings. I have been wanting to capture some of these furious Latin grooves that Zenon et al perform for a while but they are so difficult to pin down. With Moises and Transcribe! software, I was able to get an in although it was by no means certain and the Moises metronome couldn’t fine the one any more than I could in some places. I ended up going back of fore and moving the one a half beat here and and a half beat there but I think I have got it. If I haven’t. I apologise. I am Welsh. That’s all I have!

I can’t tell you anything about the bass player as he has the same name as several other Ricardo Lugos which makes an internet search problematic so, if there is anyone out there who can point me in the right direction, i would be grateful. This is an impossible read at the tempo that the tune is played at but studying the chart is a great way of getting under these kinds of grooves. The fact that I will never get to perform with percussionist who play like this is neither here nor there. Sometimes you just have to go there.

This is the Ricardo Lugo bass part to the tune ‘El Leon’ from the 2006 Paoli Mejias album, ‘Transcend’.
