Everybody Knows you When You’re Up And In – Jeff Berlin

Jeff Berlin – Bass

As much as I would love to be able to say that I have transcribed everything JB has recorded, his chordal stuff is very hard to ‘find’, especially when it is accompaniment and not just performed solo (and is is damn hard then). So a ‘complete’ Jeff Berlin thing is unlikely ever to happen. Nevertheless, my admiration for this man’s playing makes everything his has recorded an attractive proposition.

‘Everybody Knows You When You’re Up And In’ is another of those titles that JB likes where he takes a famous standard tune and steals the title by flipping it around. ‘Liebman on a Jet Plane’, ‘A Mark You Remade’ and ‘Don’t Be Happy, Worry’ are other examples. This is a tricksy little 16-bar tune that is constantly changing key so the accidentals are all over the place which makes it a very challenging read. Oh, and it’s quick so don’t expect to nail it first time around!
