Dave Holland – Bass

Another one from that series of Dave Holland Quintet recordings from the 19080s, this one featuring the Coleman/Priester/Wheeler/Smith line-up. The tune is called ‘World Protection Blues, another Doug Hammond composition, and comes from the 1985 album, ‘Seeds Of Time’. Great composition, this one is only challenging from the point of view of bar lengths. I have used the melody parts to ‘find’ the bar lengths in the heads and the ‘feel’ of the tune in the solos (I put the first beat of the bar where my ears told me Holland was playing a ‘one’). Please feel free to disagree – this is just how I am hearing it. I love these albums and have listened to them often over the last 40 years. I have a lot of favourite players but Holland is one of my favourite favourites.
