Ron Carter – Bass
Ron Carter is probably one of the most recorded double bass players in the history of Jazz. The man who took over the chair in the Miles Davis Quartet after Paul Chambers left the band also went to school with Chambers but he told me himself that he didn’t have much to do with PC at CASS Technical High School as Carter was a cellist and didn’t take up the bass until after he left school and realised that the classical world was still struggling with entrenched racism and work would be hard to find. He moved over the bass and the rest id discography.
The transcription is from the first Wynton Marsalis album and is one of those charts that you will need to spend time with listening to the record as Carter’s approach is very idiosyncratic and hard to put down on paper. It’s a lovely performance, though, and there is lots to learn here.
