Scophile – John Patitucci (head only)

John Patitucci – Bass

I can’t believe that it is 45 years since this album was released. This tune is a Patitucci composition that has Scofield written all over it – think ‘Techno’ and that whole ‘Still Warm’ period. We know that Patitucci didn’t invent the six-string bass but, for my generation, he was the guy who gave it a voice. Apparently, the decision to move to a six-string was Chick Corea’s not Patitucci’s when Corea asked JP to take up the bass chair in his Elektric Band in 1986 – I remember us all wetting ourselves over his playing on ‘Got A Match’. In my view, where six strings are concerned, I am not convinced that much has happened that betters that JP was doing on that track.

This is the head only to the tune ‘Scophile’ from the 1990 Patitucci’s 3rd solo album, ‘Sketchbook’. I didn’t want to do the complete performance as it is very long and very free. Maybe one day……ar maybe not.
