Anthony Jackson – Bass
Another request, although this is a tune I have long adored, this is the opening track of Michel Petrucciani’s 1989 album, ‘Music’. I got to see Petrucciani with AJ and Steve Gadd at the Brecon Jazz Festival in, I think, 1998 (Petrucciani died in ’99) and I remember it very well as it was a pleasure to see AJ in this setting. I believe they did this tune but I cannot be sure as I saw MP twice (Michael Bowie was on bass in 1992).
The transcription is intense and is chock full of AJ’s personality. If you study this transcription closely, there is a lot in there to learn about Latin rhythms and reading 16ths. Took me about 5 or 6 hours to get this one down! It is very quick so a lot of AJ’s phrasing has to be incredibly accurate.
