La Comparsa – Michel Camilo Trio

Anthony Jackson – Bass

We love Anthony Jackson – he’s the Governor. Clearly a man of considerable integrity and someone who takes his playing very seriously. His reluctance to solo despite his obvious capacity to do so is testament to his musicality and it is to his credit that composers seek him out specifically because they want his sound, his ideas, his creativity, his musicality, his capacity to groove. I have lots of recordings of AJ that are relatively obscure and he shines every time. Today, we are returning to the Michel Camilo Trio recording ‘Triangulo’ from 2002. The tune is called ‘La Comparsa’ which is Spanish for ‘The Appearance’ – the tune was written by Ernesto Lecuona, a Cuban composer and pianist, born August 6, 1895 in Guanabacoa, Havana, Cuba. Lecuona died in November 29, 1963 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.

The transcription is the whole bass performance. Not massively difficult but there are challenges if you are not comfortable with the Latin grooves and the push that defines so much of Latin music.
