I Cannot Believe It’s True – Phil Collins

John Giblin – Bass

John Giblin had a massive CV before he landed the Simple Minds gig, having played with Brand X, Chris De Burgh, Kate Bush, Jon Anderson and an array of other artists. He was another early Wal user and featured the bass in a duet with Percy Jones (‘Wal To Wal’ from the Brand X album, ‘Product’). His singling fretless parts were always a joy but there were times when his role was more traditional and this is one such occasion. The bass part for Phil Collins’ ‘I Cannot Believe It’s True’ from the 1982 album, ‘Hello, I Must Be Going’ was a fairly routine pop song with the Phoenix Horns (from Earth, Wind and Fire) adding some great stabs throughout. Giblin’s lines are rarely over the top but, at the same time, they are never dull and there is colour enough in here. Not too difficult a read but there are a couple of licks that will trip up the unwary.
