Seth Govan – Bass
Here is about two and a half minutes of Seth Govan’s playing on his brother Guthrie’s tune, Hangover, from the 2006 Guthrie Govan album, ‘Erotic Cakes’. I stopped at the 2:38 mark as things get impossible to hear, never mind write down. Seth is from down the road from where I live in Suffolk but, whilst I have played many times with Zak Barrett, the sax player with The Fellowship, I have never met Seth or Guthrie. I had heard Guthrie, of course, but I had not heard Seth until someone asked about a transcription of this performance. All I can say is Wow! I am sure that Seth suffers from the ‘GG’s brother’ syndrome but, hell, he isn’t in anyone’s shadow. The bass solo on this track is impossible. I cannot even hear where the pulse is. The tune is in 9:8 but during the solo, Seth plays 4 over three, like a 12:8 over the 9:8. He then does something else with the rhythm and I am buggered if I can figure it out. I hold my hands up and admit I am beaten. I am going to contact him today to see if he can explain himself.
