Carlos Henriquez – Bass
This one is an excerpt and it is only a steer as there is detail that I have chosen not to examine as closely as I have other performances as I am doing this on my lap in an unconducive environment. I just wanted to get something down on this tune as it is little more that a two bar phrase that repeats for about 4 minutes. It them changes but the track is 11 minutes long and it was not going to happen.
The tune is the Wynton Marsalis composition ‘From The Plantation To The Penitentiary’ from the 2007 album of the same name. It’s one of those things where the start is such that it is challenging to find the first beat of the bar. I am hearing the tambourine hit on the third beat of the first of two bars of 3:4. I came to that conclusions because of where the horns and then the vocals come in. I am not entirely confident. It’s a great groove, deep in the tradition but still fresh as anything. Very playable once you get the thing under your fingers but Henriquez varies things subtly as the groove progresses. Great ‘bass’ playing.
