Equality (vocal version) – Dave Holland Quartet

Dave Holland – Bass

This track features two women who deserve all the praise that they get. Vocalist Cassandra Wilson lends her signature smoky vocals to this wonderful Holland composition which features the poetry of another legend, this time of African American literature, Maya Angelou. The tune is ‘Equality’ from the 1996 Dave Holland Quartet album, ‘Dream Of The Elders’. There are two versions of this tune on the album, this vocal version and another instrumental version. Holland stays in the background on this one, allowing Wilson to share the words of Angelou unimpeded. A stunning performance that features Holland, Steve Nelson (vibes), Eric Person (sax) and Gene Jackson (dr). A beautiful album but this is a stand-out track. The part is not so difficult to play or to read.
