Como Fue – Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra

Carlos Henriquez – Bass

I love all the Latin grooves and the subtle differences between the different styles but I have to admit I don’t know one from the other in terms of explaining a Son from a Guaguanco. This Carlos Henriquez performance is from the Jazz At Lincoln Center album, ‘Live In Cuba’. It’s a great recording and there are some wonderful performances across the whole gig (it is a live recording). This one has the lot of personality and I love the whole feel of the thing. It is not massively challenging a read if you understand that nuances of Cuban bass playing a la Israel ‘Cachao’Lopez, Cachaito et al. so one for the advancing reader. The track is called ‘Como Fur’ which is Spanish for ‘How Was It’? The vocalist is Bobby Carcasses, a Cuban jazz musician (trumpeter, pianist, conguero), singer, bandleader, big-band sideman and connector (born 1938 in Kingston, Jamaica), founder of the Havana jazz festival Jazz Plaza.
