Kermit Driscoll – Bass
I have always enjoyed Kermit Driscoll’s playing and had the pleasure of hearing him live when he appeared in the U.K. with the Frisell Trio playing the music to a three Buster Keaton films! I vividly remember how much his live sound sounded like his recorded sound. It still amazes me every time it happens. Ridiculous that I would expect anything different, really. This is a bit if light relief as I am in the middle of a massive transcription that is wearing down my resolve so I thought I would try something ridiculously simple and it doesn’t get much simpler than this. I have always been fascinated by Bill Frisell’s ability to sound out of tune but not out of tune and Driscoll’s bass has that similar thing going on – is it a D or a Db? I am fairly confident that the notes are correct on this as I have played along with it.
The tune is called ‘Billy The Kid – Celebretion After Billy’s Capture’ which is pt. 5 of the 7 part ‘Billy The Kid Suite’ by Aaron Copeland, reconfigured for guitar, bass, drums, clarinet and accordion. The album is the 1993 Frisell album ‘Have A Little Faith’. Glorious album that makes me smile every time I hear it.
