Steve Rodby – Bass
Another fine example of Rodby’s capacity to play the right notes, nothing more and nothing less. The phrasing on this is perfectly suited to the song, a Pat Metheny composition from the 2002 Metheny Group album, ‘Speaking Of Now’. Having Richard Bona in the band and not playing bass is evidence of Metheny’s clarity of vision. He could employ the choppsiest of bass players but he doesn’t. He needs Rodby’s tone and discipline (as well as his skills as a producer). The tune is called ‘Afternoon’ and the only challenging is reading the tied notes in a 12:8 groove (I have seen it written as 4:4 but that didn’t work in my head).
