Steve Swallow – Bass

Just a bass solo this time. The tune is from the 2016 John Scofield album with the masterful title of ‘Country For Old Men’. The album features Scofield arrangements of Country evergreens and includes a Jazz version of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’. This is a short excerpt from the track ‘Just A Girl I Used To Know’, a gentle waltz and features the bass solo of Steve Swallow. It’s a very simple thing but not as simple as you think due to the tension between even eighths, swung eighths and triplets. Add the little expression tie ins and it all gets a bit lairy. Pretty little thing, though. A great album where the chops are well hidden. Sco and Swallow have been playing together for most of 50 years now.
