The Ruby And The Pearl – Branford Marsalis Quartet

Eric Revis – Bass

I saw this quartet at Ronnie Scotts in the early 2000s and what a roast. Nevertheless, there are so many examples in the band’s discography of exquisite ballad playing and there is so much to credit them for in their ‘slow grooves’. This tune is called ‘The Ruby And The Pearl’ and comes from the 2004 Quartet album, ‘Eternal’. It has a light tango feel rather than a bossa but I guess that depends on how you hear. There is nothing in here that anyone can’t play. In fact, if you use the open A string and play around the fifth fret, you can play most of the chart without moving your left hand (the harmonics are inaccessible in this position). An easy read but one which evidences that you can play top level music without being Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
