Segment – Mike Metheny (head, trumpet and guitar solos)

Mike Metheny – flugelhorn/Pat Metheny – guitar

This one was a request from someone on Talkbass – ‘do you do solos that aren’t bass’? There are a few on here , one of the earliest was Gerry Mulligan’s ‘Song For Strayhorn’ and there is some Miles and Wynton Marsalis amongst a small number of others but the chap (I am assuming he is a chap; the avatar name is inconclusive) is a fan of the solos by Mike and Pat Metheny from this particular track from the older boy’s 1986 album, ‘Day In – Night Out’. The tune is Charlie Parker’s ‘Segment’ although I think it is played a minor third lower than Bird did it (I may be wrong). The chords are from the Charlie Parker Omnibook transposed to fit this version of the tune.

It is worth saying that I had to take some liberties with the octaves on this one because, as it often the case with horn solos and guitar, there go either too high or too low from a four string bass. You may find you are jumping around more than the actual recorded solos do.
