Jorge Roeder – Bass
Another tune from Roeder’s solo bass album, ‘El Suelo Mio’ (Google translates this as ‘my floor’), this is a drone piece called ‘Bounce’. The whole thing revolves around a D drone and I think Roeder has detuned his low E string to a D in order to pull it off (I can’t see how the rest of it works in he is using the D string). Sometimes when I am transcribing, the tone of the recorded instrument is so full I am not always confident of which octave a note is. The tone in this instrument is massive and one minute I think I know what is happening and them ‘BOOM’, I am doubting myself. There are some challenging position changes but it is playable with time investment. Not too challenging a read in general but the tempo makes it a roast. Probably a lot easier on electric bass (but that would be missing the point, really, wouldn’t it?). Watch the notes that ring out beautifully over the D pedal and don’t close them too soon.
