Oblivion – Astor Piazolla

Unknown – Bass

The bass part for this piece is written so, in that sense, the identity of the player is not that important. This is a simple bass part that probably mirrors that of a dozen other pieces by the legendary composer/bandoneon player Astor Piazolla. The compositions by this Argentinian musician are hugely popular in World Music and Classical Music circles and have found their way into the repertoire of many Jazz musicians also (Gary Burton has done a Piazolla album, as has Al Di Meola for starters) but this is one of those artists where the compositions are the stars of the show (another of those artists is Antonio Carlos Jobim). The parts are easy to play and easy to read but it is such a beautiful way to hear these tunes whilst you are reading them.

This is one of my favourite Piazolla melodies, ‘Oblivion’ (this version was recorded by the man himself in 1984). In case you are interested, ‘Oblivion’ in this case is not about destruction but is translated as ‘Forgetting’ (now listen to the piece and tell me he is not a genius).
