Trumpet solo: Miles Davis
It has long been recommended that, as well as studying and exploring bass solos, bass players shoudl investigate the soloing of other instruments as a means of changing their perspective on phrasing and note choices. Jaco’s famous rendition of Charlie Parker/Miles Davis’s ‘Donna Lee’, Jeff Berlin’s version of Cannonball Adderley’s ‘Marabi’ are juse two examples but YouTube is now littered with bass players performing transcriptions of solos from other instrumentalists than other bass players.
This transcription is from the 1957 LP ‘Walkin” by the Miles Davis Sextet and features Miles’ trumpet solo transcribed and reframed for bass. There a couple of very challenging bars that will push most of us to theedge of uour chops but, stick with it. It may take you somewhere where bass soloists rarely go. The solo pick-up starts at the 0:58 mark on the video.
