Bass Player: Dave Holland
Dave Holland (born 1 October 1946) is an English double bassist, composer and bandleader who has been performing and recording for over five decades. He has lived in the United States for over 40 years.[
His work ranges from pieces for solo performance to big band. Holland runs his own independent record label, Dare2, which he launched in 2005. Credits include Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Jack De Johnette, John Abercrombie, Christ Potter, Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler, Hank Jones and a host of other Jazz performers of considerable note. He has led his own bands since the 1970s and it from on of his Quintet albums that the attached head comes from. The tune is ‘Vicissitudes’ from the 1996 album, ‘Critical Mass’ which features Holland alongside saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, Steve Nelson on vibes and drummer Nate Smith. The head has some interesting and unpredictable note placements and odd bar lengths so concentration is required. A short chart but an interesting challenge.
