Jaco Pastorius – Bass

I picked this album up during the Boer War, if I recall correctly, when I was a young man. It shows how much more Jaco was than a flash sideman with Weather Report. His vision was so profound and I often wonder, like Hendrix, Parker et al, what he would have achieved had he not gone down the road he travelled (the question is always, had he not been ‘that guy’, would he have achieved what he did? We will never know). This transcription is a little unsatisfactory for me as it is always challenging to get the nuances of Jaco’s voice onto paper. I had a go and hope someone gets some joy out of it.

The live version of ‘Three Views Of A Secret’ from the 1982 Jaco Pastorius Word Of Mouth Big Band recording, ‘Twins’. For me, one of those ‘genius bass playing from start to finish’ albums. If you haven’t heard it, you absolutely must.
