Bass Player: Colin ‘Wally’ Lowe

Bassist Colin ‘Wally’ Lowe held the bass chair in Birmingham based Rock band Magnum from 1975 to 1995 and played on the bands most successful albums including their classic 1982 recording ‘Chase The Dragon’. Although the songs are almost entirely written by guitarist Tony Clarkin vocalist Bob Catley, Lowe was an important part of the band during it’s most successful years. His bass parts are almost entirely written and rehearsed and there is little or no improvised passages but this is classic Rock bass; solid, tight, reliable and a great sound. The transcription features Lowe’s complete bass part for the tune ‘The Teacher’ from ‘Chase the Dragon’. It has a shuffle feel which convention allows us to write out as straight eighths but there are a couple of passages where it became necessary to write out the triplets in full in order to capture the phrasing.
