Bass Player: Jack Bruce

The final transcription from the 1979 Cozy Powell album, ‘Over The Top’, this is Jack Bruce’s bass part from the tune ‘The Loner’, penned by pianist Max Middleton. Bruce plays some really interesting parts that show why he is the legend that he is and belongs in the pantheon of Rock bass giants. The transcription features triplets a lot due to Bruce’s use of the middle triplet quarter notes, This makes the convention of writing ‘swung’ quarternotes’ inadequate for the transcription. This makes for some interesting reading challenges but offers the reader some new perspectives on playing on a tune of this kind. This transcription means that transcriptions for Bruce’s bass parts for the whole of the Powell album are now available on this website. Bilbo considers this to be one of the most important albums in the development of his concept of bass sounds.
