Bass Player: Tony Reeves
Another tune from the 1973 Greenslade LP, ‘Sunkissed You’re Not’. There are verse sections in 5:4 and some really interesting uses of extra beats and shortened bars to create tension and release. Then there is the faster, funky section which presents challenges in terms of the pace of reading. It is important to acknowledge that parts like this are invariably improvised and it would not normally be expected for a player to read the fills but to invent their own on the fly. These are useful just to get a sense of what was going on and how it all interacts. There is also a passage where, to our ears, Reeves bluffs that bass part (an augmented run from the keyboards that he tries to play in unison but which, on close inspection, is only an approximation of the line and not an accurate execution of it (it is marked on the chart but comes in at around 4:03 and is repeated).
