Bass Player – Geddy Lee
1982 saw the release of Rush’s 9th studio album, ‘Signals’. This was the start of the band’s 1980s ‘synth’ era during which the band moved away from the guitar heavy compositions that they had been known for up until this point into an era defined by Geddy Lee’s synths, Neil Peart’s electronic drums and Alex Lifeson’s haircuts. The attached transcription shows what this meant for bassist Lee; there are massive chunks of the chart that have no bass playing on them at all as Lee was constructing the songs around his keyboard playing. A lot of die hard Rush fans struggled with this at the time but, with the benefit of hindsight, there was a lot of really strong work being delivered by these guys and there are some really great tunes on these albums. This chart is all about counting!
