Spider – Jon Anderson

Jack Bruce – Bass ?

Well, I am not entirely sure. There are three bass players listed on the ‘Animation’ album cover and on Wikipedia, Stefano Cerri, John Giblin and Jack Bruce. The tune ‘Spider’ did not make it onto the album but was released as the B-side (remember them – ask your Dad (or Grandad); he will explain. I think this sounds like Jack Bruce whereas it doesn’t really sound like the other two but, other than that, I have no means of determining which of them it is. If anyone knows Stefano or JG, ask them and let me know.

This is a monster piece of vocal arranging by Anderson who, to my mind, was the only voice of Yes, not just as a singer but as a composer and arranger. If there was one singer who didn’t ‘just sing’ it was Jon Anderson. An amazing musician to the core and his life’s work is pure creativity and inspiration. The other thing I love about this track is Simon Phillips’ drums sound. ‘Animation’ has been a favourite album of mine since it appeared in 1982. To me, it still sounds as fresh today as it did over 40 years ago. The part is actually only 8 bars long and just repeats. Don’t worry about counting the 72 bars, Phillips does it for you and leads into the second section with one of his signature fill.
