Bass Player: Chris Squire

Another challenging chart from the King of Prog Bass, the late great Christopher Russell Edward Squire. This is the final track on everyone’s favourite Prog album, Close To The Edge (1972), the last album featuring the classic Yes line up of Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, CHris Squire and Bill Bruford. After this, it was good but it was never this good again (discuss?).

‘Siberian Khatru’ is a tough little nut to crack and the chart is not entirely satisfactory. The middle section (the but in 7:8) is not altogether clear due to the changing time signatures of the various instruments involved. The bar lengths are not altogether convincing as, whatever way you count it, it sounds ‘wrong’. Clearly it isn’t as the whole band hits the one of the next section but, in terms of writing it down, ouch! A tough little chart to write and a tough little sucker to play.
