UK Prog Rock band Solstice have been producing music for nearly four decades and have recently released a new album called ‘Sia’. The attached transcription is of the opening tune on the album, ‘Shout’ and, like a lot of Prog, enjoys some interesting time changes. Sections of 7:8 occur intermittently and the main opening riff is based around a four notes in a bar that is 3:4 whcih creates an interesting tension. It is important to consider note lengths and to recognise the phrases which include staccato not interspersed with longer notes in the same phrase. The first two bars of the main riff are a prime example; the first four notes are full notes whilst the second four are played short.
