John Patitucci – Bass

I love solo double bass performances much more than I do solo electric bass; the results are generally more musical and more satisfying (there are exceptions but, as a general rule….). John Patitucci has done several solo double bass pieces over the years and this one of from his 2019 (mostly) solo album ‘Soul Of The Bass’. A very satisfying album, there are other tracks that I have transcribed on here. This one is called ‘Seeds Of Change’. There are some weird things going on in terms of the time signatures but I am hearing these mostly as pauses or rushes in the phrasing the are made for aesthetic reasons and which my transcribing chops are probably falling short. Listen to the track with the transcription in front of you and you will get a sense of how I am hearing in (when does a phrase start on one and when does it start on the ‘four and..’?).

The piece if playable if you figure out the compositional approach that JP is taking to the performance. Deep stuff.
