Bass Player: Darryl Jones
Darryl Jones has something of a schizophrenic career as a bass player working with some of the greatest names in Jazz (Miles Davis, John Scofield, Steps Ahead) and Pop (Sting, The Rolling Stones). ‘The Munch’ is a very centred player, a rhythm section giant rather than an exceptional soloists but, either way, his recordings are always rock solid and tonally huge.
The transcription is not really a transcription per se. It is the bass part for the tune ‘Protocol’ from the 1986 Scofield album, ‘Still Warm’. The line is only two bars long and repeats throughout the recording. Great fun for learner readers as you can get ‘match fit’ to play this chart with minimal experience. Just find these eight notes and you are ready to play with Scofield, Omar Hakim, Don Grolnick and The Munch.
