Ronaldo Saggiorato – Bass
If there is one thing that my search for great music has taught me it’s that there are a ridiculous number of great musicians who most of us will struggle to ever get to hear. Whist we are all being spoon fed Taylor Swift and Harry Styles which, because it sells by the truckload, is treated like it is important stuff, there are a million, if not tens of millions, of great players who we will never hear unless we go around lifting up rocks. I heard this guy as a member of the Alegre Correa Sextett on the bands 1997 album, ‘Terra Magica’. I have heard him since on other Correa albums but don’t really know much about him – primarily because every reference to him on-line is in Portuguese! Irrespective of that, I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy his playing enormously and thought it was time to get some more of his stuff out there.
This is the complete Saggiorato bass performance of the tune ‘Pescador’ from the 1995 Correa Sextett album, ‘Negro Coacoa’. I don’t know what Coacoa translates as but Pescador is ‘someone who fishes with a rod and line’. What that has to do with this manic bass part, I don’t know. I can only assume that the fish they catch in Brazil are feisty little buggers!
