Not Yet – Michel Camilo

Bass Player: Anthony Jackson

Anthony Jackson’s relationship with Anthony Jackson goes back to the very earliest recordings that Camilo made and it is not too much of a stretch to say that Jackson and his six-string Contrabass Guitar has been a defining element of the Camilo sound. Whilst Jackson has not been on every recording that Camilo has released, it would be fair too said that he has been on most of them and has certainly remained the pianist’s first call bass player with his Big Band.

The love recording ‘Caribe’ is one of the most tense electric bass recordings in the history of the instrument and the listener is on the edge of their seat for the whole album but the performance on the tune ‘Not Yet’ is particularly noteworthy. The relationship between the written parts and Jackson’s interpretation is symbiotic and it is unquestionably a tour de force of six-string electric bass. Jackson was instrumental in the invention of the instrument but he has also been one of the most important exponents of it during it’s lifetime.
