Carlos Henriquez – Bass
What I love about the Marsalis stable of bassists is that they are all monster players but keep their chops under control in favour of musicality. Bob Hurst, Reginald Veal, Ben Wolfe – they all have chops to die for but they only appear when the music calls for it. This Henriquez part is a case in point; there is nothing here but feel and tone but the effect is enthralling. The tune is called ‘Love And Broken Hearts’ from the 2007 Marsalis album, ‘From The Plantation To The Penitentiary’. There are a couple of rubato passages and some tempo changes so you will have to rely on your ears to guide you. I played it through and I think it is accurate. It is harmonically unpredictable so you need to trust the ink and let it take you where you don’t think you are supposed to go!
Jennifer Sanon has some great lines: ‘I ain’t your bitch, I ain’t your ho….’.
