Losing It – Rush

Bass Player: Geddy Lee

Another track from the 1982 Rush album, ‘Signals’. Rush would always look to ensure that the tracks they recorded were transferrable to the live arena which explains why all three members of the band spent their professional lives juggling guitars, double-necked guitars, synths, bass pedals, drum triggers and a host of other bells and whistles to achieve the full effect. It was said, however, that, on every album, there was one track where the band allowed themselves to indulge in a little creative flair and gave themselves permissions to go that little bit further. On the track ‘Losing It’ the band brought in a fourth player to the fold and recruited violinist Ben Mink who would later collaborate with bassist Geddy Lee on his 2000 solo album, ‘My Favourite Headache’.

The transcription takes a little poetic licence and there are notes in there that we think are probably played on synth rather than bass but there is an 11:8 section where Mink plays a solo where there is definitely no bass so it remains ‘tacet’ (a technical term that instructs the reader to STFU). Otherwise, this is as much about reading the 5:8 groove as it is anything else. Watch the 6:4 bars near the end also!
