Limelight – Rush

Bass Player: Geddy Lee

Arguably Rush’s most successful album, ‘Moving Pictures’ appeared in 1981 and presented it’s audience with a set of tracks, each of which has become a classic; ‘Red Barchetta’, the instrumental ‘YYZ’, the evergreen ‘Tom Sawyer’ and the first of the ‘Fear’ series, ‘Witch Hunt’. One of the most celebrated tracks featured the autobiographical lyrics of the late drummer, Neil Peart’. ‘I can’t believe a stranger is a long awaited friend’ was a mantra he lived by and a reading of any of his several books would leave you in no doubt that, if you came across Peart on one of his travels, it was better to walk away than try to engage him.

The bass part to ‘Limelight’ is a classic Geddy Lee performance; growling bass, intriquing time changes and driving rhythm. A strong and defining element of the song, it is always important to remember that Lee was actually singing whilst playing this part. Oh, and get these spritely teenagers in the video.
