Robin Phillips – Bass

I love Solstice and I love Robin’s playing. This is an incomplete transcription of the opening track of the recent Solstice album, ‘Light Up’. Some really strong playing but the problem (this isn’t a problem) is that Robin’s bass sound so HUGE it is difficult to determine the exact notes that he is playing, especially when the parts he is playing get funky (listen to the second track on the album, ‘Wongle No. 9’). So I bottled it after the middle section (about 4 minutes in) – I think the rest of it is earlier parts repeated so you can find the details if you have better ears than I. Solstice have a reputation of being a bunch of unreconstructed hippies (well, they probably are, if I am honest) but there is some pretty special arranging on these recordings (especially with the vocals) and the recorded sound is awesome! Nothing dated about it.
