Juggler’s Parade – Dave Holland Quintet

Dave Holland – Bass

I struggle to say which is my favourite Dave Holland band; every line-up, from trio to big band, holds a special place in my heart. I loved the ‘Extensions’ band, the Wheeler/Coleman group, the DeJohnette/Coleman trio, all of the 90s bands, the Prism thing – it’s all incredible stuff. Even his solo albums are up there with some of the best.

This transcription is from the 1999 ‘Prime Directive’ album; another great Quintet with Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks, Billy Kilson and Steve Nelson. All top drawer. The tune is ‘Juggler’s Parade’. I have included sections of the marimba part for orientation purposes. It’s a great chart to get into weird time signature and having the discipline to see the extra beat in each alternate bar. It’s not frantic but the tempo is quick.
