Gary Willis – Bass
This was a very important album for me and I wore the vinyl out trying to figure this stuff out but, in those days, it was like pushing water uphill. With the technology available now, I have a much better chance of getting it but this one has a sneaky little section where I cannot ‘find’ the details even when slowing it down 50%. I am happy with most of it but bars 118-121 are not sitting well to my ears but I cannot figure them out with confidence. What is lovely is that little ‘solo’ that Willis plays in the middle (the whole piece is through written and there are no solos in the conventional sense. There is a strange techno-classical feel about it. There is a video of the band performing this on YouTube and, guess what, Willis drops a howler at the start, coming in too early – it can happen to the best of us.
This is my best effort at the tune ‘Ivy Towers’ from the 1985 Tribal Tech album, ‘Spears’. I can’t believe it but I can read this!! Well, at half speed, anyway.
