I’m Freaking Out – Dixie Dregs

Bass Player: Andy West

Something a cult band, The Dixie Dregs/The Dregs (the band had a name change as their career progressed) featured a string of virtuoso musicians around the core of guitarist Steve Morse, drummer Rod Morgenstein and bass maestro, Andy West. West is not a name that is often heard nowadays and he makes his money in other areas (mainly IT, we believe) but he continues to perform. Four time Grammy nominated, West played in a range of styles including funk, Rock, Jazz, Avant Garde and Country and used his full range of influences all under the unbrella of The Dregs.

This particular transcription is relatively short at only 8 bars but there is an awful lot of notes to chew on. The transcription features a very brief theme that is utilised throughout the whole performance but initially features West picking the notes in unison with Steve Morse. There are not many bass players who could have pulled this off and West shows his absolute mastery of pick playing on the Steve Morse composition ‘I’m Freaking Out’. The passage in question begins at the 2:16 mark.
