Reginald Veal – Bass

I have packed all my cds up for a move and had not had access to this recording for a while but it pooped into my head when I was looking at some other Marsalis records. The album ‘Citi Movement’ came out in 1992 when Wynton Marsalis was at the top of his game. The recording is a double album from the Septet and is s single piece but the ;suite’ is divided into shorter section, one of which is this solo bass performance from Reginald Veal. Played arco, it shows admirably that you don’t have to be Gary Karr or Edgar Meyer to make good music with a bow. The notes are not hard to play but the challenge is in making it sound deep as in profound. It’s all in the pauses and the articulation. The piece is called ‘How Long’? and comes in at just 1:06.

Just went to post it and realised that I have done it before in 2021 – the computer I did it on died and I lost the transcription in terms of my own archive so didn’t ‘see’ it when I saved.
