Filibuster – John Scofield

Bass Player: John Scofield (yes, THAT John Scofield!)

One of the finest guitarists to ever come out of Berklee, John Scofield attended at the same time as Mike Stern, Jeff Berlin, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith and Neil Stubenhaus. Despite his reputation as a guitar player, this is a transcription of the bass part to the tune ‘Filibuster’ from his 1984 album, ‘Electric Outlet’ on which the Grammy award winning guitarists gets down and dirty playing the bass. The part is actually only really six bars long but repeats, changes key but essentially repeats again before returning home. All the various themes he uses in the composition overlap and create a fantastic patchwork of counterpoints. A stunning performance on guitar, the bass part is a written line designed simply to underpin the tune. Isn’t that what it is all about?
