Doctor Wu – Steely Dan

Bass Player: Chuck Rainey (?)

CHuck Rainey is an American bass guitarist who has performed and recorded with many well-known acts, including Aretha Franking, Steely Dan and Quicy Jones. Rainey is credited for playing bass on more than 1,000 albums and, alongside Lee Sklar, Ron Carter, Will Lee and Carol Kaye, is considered the most recorded bass player in the history of recorded music.

The attached transcription is for the tune ‘Doctor Wu’ from the 1975 Steely Dan album, ‘Katy Lied’. It is not entirely clear whether it is Rainey on this track or not as Wilton Felder and Walter Becker are also credited with playing bass in this album but the specific players are not credited on a track by track basis so it is not entirely clear – knowing the Dan, it is perfectly possible that all three played on the track!! Consensus says Rainey but it comes with a health warning. The chart is fair easy to read with only a couple of phrases requiring consideration (we are not entirely convinced that the dots are right on these bars so, if you know better, do get in touch).
