Cochise – Ellis Marsalis

Bass Player: Robert Hurst (transcription is not bass part)

Another chart found in a drawer that was prepared for a pianoless Quartet Bilbo led in the 1990s, this is the head chart for the tune ‘Cochise’ from the Ellis Marsalis album, ‘Whistle Stop’. The head of the infamous Marsalis clan from New Orleans, pianist Ellis was born November 14, 1934. Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of the musical Marsalis family, when sons Branford and Wynton became popular musicians but this recording leaves us in no doubt that his playing was of the highest calibre. The album features some rare compositions including this tune by clarinettist Alvin Batiste. Entitled ‘Cochise’ the transcription is a head chart i.e. the melody and chords only. The head is transcribed for treble and bass clefs and the chords are presented for anyone who wants to use the chart for improvising/performance.
