Matt Brewer – Bass
Born in Oklahoma City to a family of musicians, Brewer began as a 10-year-old prodigy, studying at the Interlochen Academy and later as part of the inaugural class at the Juilliard Jazz Program. He has recorded three albums as a leader for the Criss Cross label, including his 2019 trio album Ganymede, and his extensive résumé includes work with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Coleman, Lee Konitz, Gerald Clayton, Vijay Iyer, Antonio Sánchez, and Mark Turner. Brewer is an adjunct professor at The New School in New York and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He joined the Collective in 2018.
(biographical; details from SF Jazz Collective website)
This is the complete Brewer bass performance on the heavily arranged SF Jazz Collective version of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s ‘Chega De Saudade’ from their 2018 album, ‘The Music Of Antônio Carlos Jobim & Original Compositions (Live: SFJazz Center 2018)’. Few will be able to read this cols at the correct tempo but there is a lot to learn from the transcription in terms of playing Latin grooves that don’t resolve on the first beat of the bar. The opening choruses of piano/vibes (Warren Wolf and Ed Simon) are thrilling. It’s electric bass, by the way, despite the picture.
