Bass Player: Geddy Lee
The 1975 Rush album, ‘Fly By Night’ was the record that introduced the legendary Neil Peart to the world, thus providing several generations of Rock drummers to their main influence. Not only did Peart bring his prodigious chops to the drum stool in the Canadian trio, he also provided a new direction for the band lyrically, taking themes of fantasy and sci-fi into the music being produced by the band. The material on ‘Fly By Night’ is significantly more sophisticated than it had been on its eponymous predecessor, the Led Zeppelin influenced ‘Rush’ (featuring drummer John Rutsey). Despite this new element, there are songs on the album that feature songs composed by Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee that featured lyrics by either player and it is one of these that features in the attached transcription.
‘Best I Can’ is the second track on side one of the original vinyl recording and both music and lyrics were written by Lee. The tune is not overly difficult to play but there are a couple of monster fills that may need closer examination before a first pass. They are fairly diatonic/blues scale orientated fills so nothing to dramatic but, still, they will test many of us at least a little.
